Dedicating hosting provides website creators the flexibility to
run and maintain their websites in the manner that they wish.
Unlike shared hosing, dedicated hosting provides clients an entire
server to lease, thus allowing them to have full control of their
dedicated server. Dedicated hosting is geared towards clients who
wish to host large sites and have access to unlimited features.
Clients who lease a dedicated server are given the ability to
pick which operating system the server uses. Most dedicating
hosting plans offer users the ability to freely implement various
forms of Linux and Unix. Commercial operating systems, such as
Microsoft Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise, are available to
dedicated hosting clients for a monthly subscription fee.
Shared hosting plans allow users to access a small part of a
single server, meaning that they are sharing resources with the
other clients that share the same server. Clients who have a
dedicated hosting plan have access to an entire server, meaning
that they do not have to share resources with anyone else. This
allows clients the ability to use as much bandwidth as needed,
usually for a fee based on the amount of bandwidth used. For
clients that plan on using a lot of bandwidth, dedicated hosting
offers them the ability to handle as much traffic as they can
generate, whereas other hosting plans will put a cap on bandwidth,
often causing a site to become unavailable once the cap has been
met.
The ability to implement different software types is an
important feature of dedicated hosting. Unlike people who have use
of a shared server, dedicated server clients are able to implement
the specific software that they need. Most dedicated server plans
have a pricing plan that offers different software bundles. If the
software that a client wishes to utilize isn’t offered in a bundled
plan, they may install the software individually, for either a
monthly subscription fee or a single onetime use fee.
Dedicated hosting has some limitations. Some dedicated hosting
providers may restrict their servers from being used to host adult
content or copyrighted material. Dedicated server limitations are
clearly spelled out in a hosting site’s TOS.
