Spotlight: On May 25, 1986, more than five million people joined hands in a line that stretched for 4,000 mi/6,400 km from New York City to Long Beach, CA. The event was called
Hands Across America. Each participant was asked to pay $10-35 in an effort to raise money for the fight against hunger and homelessness. Linking hands at 3 p.m.
EST, the participants sang "
We Are the World," "
America the Beautiful" and the Hands Across America theme song. President
Ronald Reagan and members of his
White House staff and their families joined the line. Some gaps along the way were filled by red and blue ribbons, sailboats and even trained seals.
