Alam is commonly an Arabic surname. 'Alam means "flag" or "sign" in Arabic. In Egypt, it may refer to a stone heap set up to mark a path in the desert.

It's a last name in Lebanon for many Christian maronite catholic families in Rmeich, Baskinta, Chekka, Daraya, Ain Ekrine, Abdin, Hadass el Jebi, kfarfou and few other towns.^{[citation needed]}

Alam or Abu Alam is also the name of a well known Jordanian and Syrian family of Palestinian origins (from Zaita - Tolkarem) who were named so after their great grandfather who raised the flag in some of the Ottoman army wars in Egypt.

In Indonesia, there is a small hereditary principality named Pakualaman, the rulers of which adopt a sequential instance in the "Paku Alam" name series; for instance, see Paku Alam VIII.

Alam is also of spiritual significance for the Twelver Shia Muslims in Pakistan and other areas. An Alam with a "Panja" on top of it is considered to be a religious flag of Islam, and it is said to be carried by the Prophet Muhammed, Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali during battles or expeditions. The battle of Karbala further glorifies its importance. An Alam is usually seen during Muharram Processions and at designated sites in Shia Mosques.
