Biography

Difficult to recognize in her natural blonde state following her turn as a raven-haired Neve Campbell knockoff in Scary Movie (2000), Anna Faris made her professional acting debut at the tender age of nine at Washington's Seattle Repertory Theater. Refining her skills in improvisational theater, Faris later found roles in commercials and small local productions, though her future as an actress came into question as she pursued further education and a move overseas.

Faris was raised in Seattle and studied English Literature at the University of Washington after high school, later moving to London to begin working and writing. Longing to return to her childhood love of acting, Faris took a role in the run-of-the-mill teen slasher pic Lover's Lane (1999). Making the move to Los Angeles in order to pursue an acting career full time, Faris' previous improvisational experiences would soon come in handy as she landed her breakthrough role in the popular Scream-slanted spoof of teen slasher pics, Scary Movie. Of course that role was only the beginning for young Faris, and after returning in Scary Movie 2 the following year she portrayed the co-worker and love interest of the titular character in director Lucky McKee's offbeat sleeper May. A supporting role in the Rob Schneider comedy The Hot Chick was followed by the little-seen Sheer Bliss in 2002, and the following year Faris once again scored a hit with her portrayal of a self absorbed starlet in Sofia Coppola's critically acclaimed Lost in Translation. Though it may have been something of a given that Faris would return to the screen for Scary Movie 3 in 2003, many longtime fans were surprised to see her sporting her original blonde locks - a move that effectively banished the previous installments' Neve Campbell connection and forced audiences to take Faris' finely honed comic abilities on their own terms. In 2004 the talented comic actress would make a series of appearances on the hit sitcom Friends. 2005 found her yet again being the very best aspect of an otherwise underwhelming comedy, Just Friends. However her few scenes in the multiple Oscar winning Brokeback Mountain showcased her remarkable skills, and allowed her to be funny while still showcasing her in a more dramatic context. She returned to the Scary Movie franchise for a fourth time in 2006, but she also showed up to support Uma Thurman, Luke Wilson, and Rainn Wilson in Ivan Reitman's comedy My Super Ex-Girlfriend. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Early life

Faris was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Karen, an elementary school teacher, and Jack Faris, a sociologist. She has a brother, Robert, and grew up in Edmonds, Washington.[1] Her parents encouraged her to pursue acting when she was young, and she gave her first professional acting performance at age 9, at the Seattle Repertory Theater. After attending Edmonds Woodway High School, she studied English literature at the University of Washington.

Film career

Her first significant film role was in the independent production, Lovers Lane (1999). Her breakout role was in the horror film parody Scary Movie (2000). The 5'5" Faris, a natural blonde,[2] dyed her hair black for the filming of Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2, so that her character more closely resembled Neve Campbell, who played the corresponding character in Scream, one of the films that Scary Movie parodied.

Faris gained further popularity after she received the role of the recurring character Erica, the birth mother for Chandler and Monica Bing, in the final season of the American sitcom Friends. She also appeared in the critically acclaimed film, Lost in Translation, in which she plays an actress promoting an action movie.

Faris appeared in the film Waiting..., with Ryan Reynolds and Justin Long. In 2005, she appeared again with Reynolds in Just Friends, playing a supporting role as a pop-diva singer named "Samantha James." Faris's role as the motor-mouthed LaShawn Malone in Brokeback Mountain (2005) brought her to the attention of a much wider audience. Faris starred with Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson in the feature film My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006). In 2008, she appeared in the comedy Young Americans, playing Topher Grace's twin sister,[3] in addition to, Mama's Boy, with Jon Heder, Jeff Daniels and Diane Keaton and in Smiley Face, with Adam Brody and John Cho. In 2007, she produced and starred in The House Bunny, a film with Happy Madison Productions about a retired Playboy bunny. In the summer 2007 season of HBO's Entourage, Faris guest-starred as herself. She also made an appearance as herself in a video on eatdrinkordie.com with Internet wine guru Gary Vaynerchuk.[4]

More recently, Faris co-starred as Seth Rogen's cosmetic counter girlfriend in Jody Hill's 2009 comedy, Observe and Report.[5]

Faris won the "Stonette of the Year" award at High Times magazine's Stony Awards, in Los Angeles, on October 13, 2007, for her role in Smiley Face.[6]

In 2009, she was nominated in MTV's Movie Awards for Best Comedic Performance for her movie The House Bunny.

Personal life

In 2004, Faris married actor Ben Indra,[1] whom she met while working on Lovers Lane and whom she had dated since 1999.[7] She filed for divorce on April 3, 2007, citing irreconcilable differences.[8] Faris married actor Chris Pratt, on July 9, 2009 in Bali.[9]
