Biography

Though French actress Annabella was promoted as a "new face" when she arrived in Hollywood in 1937, she had in fact been in European films since her 1926 debut in Abel Gance's Napoleon. During the mid-1930s, she had been France's most popular actress, thanks to such other impressive pre-U.S. credits as Rene Clair's Le Million (1931) and Alexander Korda's Under the Red Robe (1936). During her eight-year stay at 20th Century-Fox, Annabella married Tyrone Power, with whom she co-starred in Fox's Suez (1938). Professing that Power was the only love of her life, Annabella never remarried after their divorce. Her daughter Anne was later the wife of German star Oskar Werner. Four years after her final American film, 13 Rue Madeline, Annabella made her last screen appearance in Le Pus Bel Amour de Don Juan (1952). Annabella died of a heart attack at her home in Neuilly, France on September 18, 1996. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Annabella (14 July 1907 – 18 September 1996)[1] was a French cinema actress who appeared in 46 films between 1927 and 1952, including some Hollywood films during the late 1930s and 1940s.

Born Suzanne Georgette Charpentier in La Varenne Saint Hilaire, Val-de-Marne, France, Annabella made her film debut in 1927 and over the following decade established herself as one of France's most popular cinema actresses. In 1936 she won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for Veille d'armes (1935).

She was cast as the female lead in the British-made film Wings of the Morning (1937) opposite Henry Fonda, and her success in this role led her to other ventures in Hollywood. She appeared in Suez (1938) with Loretta Young and Tyrone Power. Her romance with Power was widely reported by movie magazines of the day, and in 1939 she and Power were married. They divorced in 1948. He adopted her child, Anne, who later married actor Oskar Werner.

During the 1940s her career began to wane, however she played the female leading role in 13 Rue Madeleine (1947) opposite James Cagney. In 1952 she made her final film, and retired after 1954 TV appearance.

She died from a heart attack at Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, aged 89, and was interred in Passy Cemetery.
