They are no longer little, and very few are red, but schoolhouses are a specialty of Barnhart (formerly Douglas E. Barnhart). One of the largest general contractors in San Diego, the company, which is a subsidiary of Heery International, is also ranked as one of the nation's largest builders of educational facilities. In addition to building schools and universities, Barnhart provides construction management for sports facilities, hospitals, and offices. Its list of projects includes PETCO Park (home of the San Diego Padres), the University of California Riverside Science Library, and the Sails Pavilion at the San Diego Convention Center. Barnhart also retrofits buildings to meet seismic standards.
