City (1990 pop. 25,186), seat of Boone co., central Iowa, on the Des Moines River; inc. 1865. It is a railroad and industrial center with plants making machinery, steel fabrications, and plastic signs. It was laid out (1865) by the railroad, which built a long, high double-track bridge there. In 1887 it annexed the nearby rival town of Boonesboro (founded 1851).

Boone is a city in and the county seat of Boone County,6 Iowa, United States. It is the principal city of the 'Boone, Iowa Micropolitan Statistical Area' which encompasses all of Boone County, Iowa. This micropolitan statistical area, along with the 'Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area' comprise the larger 'Ames-Boone, Iowa Combined Statistical Area'. The population of the city was 12,803 at the 2000 census.

Boone is located on the historic Lincoln Highway and was the birthplace of First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. The city has a long railroad history and is home of the tourist Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad. Boone is also the headquarters of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Fareway chain of grocery stores. It is also home to a campus of the Des Moines Area Community College. Boone is the home of Kate Shelley, a railroad heroine of the late 19th Century.

Boone is located at 42°3′40″N, 93°53′10″W (42.061127, -93.886057)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.1 km² (8.9 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 12,803 people, 5,313 households, and 3,363 families residing in the city. The population density was 553.6/km² (1,433.9/mi²). There were 5,585 housing units at an average density of 241.5/km² (625.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.34% White, 0.32% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.35% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population.

There were 5,313 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% were married couples living together, 9.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,179, and the median income for a family was $48,213. Males had a median income of $32,106 versus $22,119 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,995. About 5.4% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.9% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.
