Still a young company, Brigham Exploration was one of the first small independent exploration and production firms to use 3-D seismic imaging. The company continues to rely on 3-D and other advanced technologies for onshore exploration. It traditionally explored in the Anadarko Basin, the onshore Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast, and West Texas, but has shifted its focus in recent years to the lucrative oil shale plays in the Rockies. In 2010 Brigham Exploration reported proved reserves of 66.8 million barrels of oil equivalent. Since its founding in 1990, Brigham Exploration has drilled more than 1,070 gross wells. In 2011 the company was acquired by Norway's Statoil in a $4.4 billion deal.
