Bubba is an American relationship nickname formed from brother, given to boys to indicate their role in the family, especially the eldest male sibling. For some boys and men, bubba is used so pervasively it replaces the given name. The nickname may also be used outside the family by friends as a term of affection.

Because of its association with the southern part of the United States, bubba is often used outside the South as a pejorative meaning low economic status and limited education. The term "bubba" may also be taken to mean one who is a "good ol' boy." In the US Army and Marines, bubba can mean a lay soldier, similar to grunt but with connotations of endearment instead of derision. For example "Can you make that device easier to work, 'cus every bubba is gonna have to use it."

At times it may be used as a term of endearment (or in an insulting sense) for a person who is rather fat or has a large body frame, especially for men. In popular culture it is often joked that new male prisoners will be locked up with a large guy called Bubba who will become forcibly sexually intimate with them.[1][2]

Bubba has also developed into a proper noun, used as a term of endearment, to describe someone who is especially lovable, adorable, etc.[where?] Also used to identify someone's significant other (i.e "She's my Bubba".[citation needed]) It is said to have evolved from the word 'baby'. Used predominantly in the Chicago area, specifically in the Edgewater/Andersonville neighborhoods.[citation needed] However, the word with the same meaning, exists both in Hebrew and in Yiddish. The word Bubba בובה ( pronounced boo- bah) which means 'doll' or 'darling,' is mainly used with in Jewish/Israeli circles, as an endearing word to describe a young girl,or in some cases a small male child. In Yiddish, most people use the popular Bubbale בובהלה ( pronounced boo-bah-lay) to mean 'my darling'. It can also be used as a name or nickname for female pets in Hebrew. Some men use it in Israeli slang as a way of saying, 'Hey Baby.'[citation needed]

In recent years, the term has also come to mean in General and prison slang, a person who sexually assaults new inmates.
