CNX Gas may sound like a product for riot control, but it is in fact a company that produces a more innocuous, but valuable, commodity. A subsidiary of CONSOL Energy, CNX Gas is one of the most productive coalbed methane gas (CBM) producers in the US. Through its properties in the Appalachian Basin (primarily in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia), CNX Gas produces more than 94 billion cu. ft. of gas per year. Almost 20% of its 2009 gas production was derived in conjunction with CONSOL Energy's coal mining activity. In 2009 the company had proved reserves of 1.9 trillion cu. ft. of natural gas equivalent.
