The name may not ring a bell, but Carillion is a major force in the UK's construction and support services industries. The company builds and manages commercial and infrastructure projects including health care, government, corporate, education, utility, and railroad projects. It also invests in public-private partnership (PPP) projects such as rail upgrades and new hospitals. Other business segments provide support services including engineering services for the oil and gas industry, property development, property management, IT services, and staffing. Carillion operates throughout Britain, in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, Canada, and the Caribbean.

Carillion plc (LSE: CLLN) is a British-based construction-services business headquartered in Wolverhampton, West Midlands. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.

History

Carillion was created in July 1999 by a demerger from Tarmac, which was founded in 1903.[3]

In March 2005, Carillion acquired Planned Maintenance Group for circa £40 million.[4] In February 2006, Carillion went on to acquire Mowlem, another UK support-services firm, for circa £350 million[5] and in February 2008, Carillion acquired Alfred McAlpine, another UK support-services firm, for £572 million.[6]

Operations

Carillion now has four divisions: Building, Business Services, Infrastructure and International.[7]

Carillion undertakes a range of construction projects, including roads and hospitals, and also provides facilities management services. Most of its business is in the United Kingdom, but it also operates in several other regions, such as Canada and the Middle East.

Carillion Rail carries out track renewals on the UK rail network and work under contracts from Network Rail.

Major projects involving Carillion have included new facilities for the Royal Opera House completed in 2000,[8] the Tate Modern completed in 2000,[9] the Grand Mosque in Oman completed in 2001,[10] the Copenhagen Metro completed in 2002,[11] Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) completed in 2003,[12] the M6 Toll completed in 2003,[13] Beetham Tower Manchester completed in 2006,[14] new facilities for the John Radcliffe Hospital completed in 2006,[15] the Sheppey Crossing completed in 2006,[16] High Speed 1 completed in 2007,[17] Aylesbury Vale Parkway completed in 2008[18] and the new facilities at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth in 2009.[19]
