History and Tourism

Late 20th century and early 21st century

  • During the last two decades or so, Cariño has been making efforts to re-invent itself as an attractive coastal resort following the successful example of nearby Cedeira, with some degrees of success. One of the projects includes a 1.7 Km coastal front promenade.
  • From 2006, Cariño City Council has started to operate some (specially adapted for educational purposes) fishing trawlers, to enable visitors to discover Cariño’s beautiful coast from a different perspective.

World War II

The following German U-Boats have been reported as sunk somewhere near the fishing port of Carino Coast of El Ortegal:

Industry

  • Farming and timber production are important sectors in the borough though not as much as Fishing. Trawlers from Cariño travel across the world to distant places like South Africa, Terra Nova in Canada or the Irish Box to get tons of fish. Most of the fish, specially tuna is putted in tin-cans in warehouses locally for later being distributed to different parts of Spain and Europe.
  • In the “Sierra da Capelada” horse breeding is particularly important, and in the Summer Season they celebrate an interesting festivity “A Rapa das Bestas” where the newly born horses are marked and have their hair cut. The whole festivity is open to all visitors.
  • Wind-mill parks are common in Ferrolterra particularly in the boroughs of Cariño, Cedeira and A Capela.
