William of Champeaux

(c. 1070-c. 1120) Theologian and teacher first at Paris and subsequently at Châlons-sur-Marne, where he became bishop in 1114. Philosophically he is remembered for taking the realist side in a dispute over the nature of universals with his pupil, the nominalist Abelard, who defeated him completely.
