  1. A part or structure, such as a protuberance, that is composed of a horny substance.

Pl. cornua [L.] horn; a hornlike excrescence or projection; a structure that appears horn-shaped, especially in section. See also cornual.

  • c. ammonis — see hippocampus.
  • dorsal c. — the dorsal protuberance of gray matter in the spinal cord. Called also dorsal horn.
  • lateral c. — the lateral projection from the lateral intermediate substance of the spinal cord. It is prominent only in the thoracolumbar parts of the cord.
  • nasal c. — the slender, ventral part of the comma-shaped alar cartilages that make up the support for the rim of the nostril.
  • thyroid cartilage c. — there are rostral and caudal cornua borne on this cartilage.
  • uterine c. — the horns of the uterus.
  • ventral c. — the ventral horn of gray matter in the spinal cord. Contains the motor horn cells for the neurons of the peripheral nerves.
