The lights in Buenos Aires owe their twinkle to Empresa Distribuidora y Comercializadora Norte (or, more simply, Edenor). The company is Argentina's largest electricity distributor in terms of both number of customers served (more than 2.5 million) and electricity sold (more than 18,616 GWh a year). Edenor's service area encompasses the northern portion of Buenos Aires and surrounding areas; more than a third of its business is with residential customers. Up until 2005 it had been 90%-owned by France-based energy giant EDF, which sold most of its stake to affiliates of Argentina-based investment fund Grupo Dolphin at that time.
