USA (Utah): a river, originally named Potato Creek by Almon H. Thompson because it flowed out of what the Mormons called Potato Valley, and a town named after Silvestre Velez de Escalante, a Spanish Franciscan missionary, who was the first white man known to have crossed the Utah wilderness in 1776–7 while searching for a route between Santa Fe in New Mexico and Monterey, California. In doing so, he rediscovered the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
