forte

Dictionary: for·te1   (fôr'', fôrt, fōrt) pronunciation
n.
  1. Something in which a person excels.
  2. The strong part of a sword blade, between the middle and the hilt.

[French fort, from Old French, strong, from Latin fortis. See fort.]

SYNONYMS   forte, métier, specialty, thing. These nouns denote something at which a person is particularly skilled: Writing fiction is her forte. The theater is his métier. The professor's specialty was the study of ancient languages. Mountain climbing is really my thing.

USAGE NOTE   The word forte, coming from French fort, should properly be pronounced with one syllable, like the English word fort. Common usage, however, prefers the two-syllable pronunciation, (fôrPRIMARY_STRESStāSECONDARY_STRESS), which has been influenced possibly by the music term forte borrowed from Italian. In a recent survey a strong majority of the Usage Panel, 74 percent, preferred the two-syllable pronunciation. The result is a delicate situation; speakers who are aware of the origin of the word may wish to continue to pronounce it as one syllable but at an increasing risk of puzzling their listeners.

for·te2 (fôr'') pronunciation Music.
adv. & adj. (Abbr. f)

n.
A note, passage, or chord played forte.

[Italian, strong, forte, from Latin fortis.]

    Biography

Forte was a long-running Oklahoma progressive thrash/power metal outfit initially similar in sound to Metal Church and Jag Panzer, later comparable to Dream Theater, and founded by the Scott brothers -- guitarist Jeff and drummer Greg -- in 1987. Together with singer James Randel and bassist Ghames Jones, they recorded their debut album, Stranger Than Fiction, for the Massacre label in 1992, then replaced Randel with Bill Dollins prior to 1994's sophomore Division. David Thompson then replaced Dollins for 1997's Destructive, an album that also introduced bassist Richard Sharpe. This lineup stayed together long enough to record one final album, Rise Above, in 1999, but despite supposedly reuniting with original vocalist James Randel, Forte has yet to record in the new millennium. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

    Forte/Forté may refer to:

    • Forte, from the French fort for "strength", originally pronounced pronounced /ˈfɔrt/ but now commonly /ˈfɔ:teɪ/ in English[1]; a person's strong point [1] ("Preparing gourmet cuisine is his forte"). The English pronunciation is likely due to a historical confusion with the doublet below (musical term from the Italian). In light of this, some people regard the common English pronunciation as incorrect and insist that it should be pronounced /ˈfɔrt/, although the French word is actually pronounced with a silent T.[2]
    • Forte (music), a musical dynamic meaning "loudly" or "strong"
