Fruitland is a city located in Payette County, Idaho, United States. It lies along U.S.
Route 95 in the Treasure Valley of southwest Idaho, about 50 miles west of
Boise and near the border with Oregon. Fruitland
is named after the apple orchards that surround the community, and its slogan is "The Big Apple of Idaho."
As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,805.
Geography
Fruitland is located at 44°0'58" North, 116°55'17" West (44.016035, -116.921450)1, within the Snake River watershed.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area
of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²), none of which is covered by
water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,805 people in the city,
organized into 1,378 households, and 1,044 families. The population density is
972.9/km² (2,512.2/mi²). There are 1,518 housing units at an average density of 388.1/km² (1,002.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the
city is 87.70% White, 0.89% Asian, 0.60% Native American, 0.05% African American, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 8.02% from other races, and 2.71% from two or more races. 17.92% of the population
are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,378 households out of which 40.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% are
non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or
older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.20.
In the city the population is spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from
45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 93.8 males. For
every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $32,469, and the median income for a family is $36,614. Males have a median
income of $31,419 versus $22,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is
$14,488. 11.9% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out
of the total population, 15.6% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty
line.
