GTx knows hormones are just as important to men as they are to women. The company develops therapies targeting estrogens and androgens for prostate cancer and other diseases in the arena of men's health. GTx's lead drug candidate, Acapodene, could prevent men who have been identified with certain precancerous conditions from developing prostate cancer. The drug may also be useful in treating osteoporosis, hot flashes, and other side effects of androgen-deprivation therapy (a treatment for advanced prostate cancer). To fund its work, GTx sells Fareston, a drug for metastatic breast cancer. Chairman J.R. Hyde owns nearly one-third of the company.
