Grayslake is a village in Lake County,
in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of a special census
conducted in 2003, the village population was 20,330.
The Village of Grayslake is also home to the College of Lake County and the
Lake County Fairgrounds.
Geography
Grayslake is located at 42°20′54″N, 88°1′57″W (42.348271,
-88.032428).1 The village is located in the
Chicago metropolitan area,
approximately 64 km (40 mi) north of Chicago’s downtown, approximately 22 km (14 mi) west
of Lake Michigan, and approximately 24 km (15 mi) south of the Wisconsin border.
Grayslake is located in central Lake County. Neighboring communities include Libertyville, Mundelein, Round Lake Park, Lake Villa, Lindenhurst, and Gurnee.
Grayslake is also located in the Avon Township of Lake County with a small portion in the Fremont Township.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total
area of 24.7 km² (9.6 mi²). 24.3 km² (9.4 mi²) of
it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (1.68%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 18,506 people, 6,503 households, and 4,948 families residing
in the village. The population density was 760.1/km² (1,969.2/mi²). There were 6,642
housing units at an average density of 272.8/km² (706.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 91.00% White, 1.58% African American, 0.19% Native American, 4.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.70% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.97% of the population.
There were 6,503 households out of which 48.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.3% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% were
non-families. 18.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or
older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.31.
In the village the population was spread out with 33.1% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 40.4% from 25 to 44, 16.3%
from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2
males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $73,143, and the median income for a family was $81,503. Males had a
median income of $60,857 versus $37,839 for females. The per capita income for the
village was $28,898. About 2.4% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty
line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 3.2% of those age 65 or over.
