An elevated ridge of tissue on the surface of the cerebral hemispheres of the brain.

 

Pl. gyri [L.] one of the many convolutions of the surface of the brain caused by infolding of the cortex (gyri cerebri), separated by fissures or sulci. These are not defined here. The list usually includes: g. ambiens, gyri breves insulae, g. callosus, g. centrifugales, g. centripetales, gyri cerebri, g. fasciolaris, g. lunaris and the cingulate, coronal, dentate, ectomarginal, ectosylvian, genual, marginal, occipital, parahippocampal, postcruciate, postsplenial, precruciate, prorean, splenial, suprasplenial and sylvian gyri.

  • cerebral gyri, gyri cerebri — the tortuous elevations (convolutions) on the surface of the cerebral hemisphere, caused by infolding of the cortex and separated by fissures or sulci.

A gyrus (pl. gyri) is a ridge on the cerebral cortex. It is generally surrounded by one or more sulci.
