Hugh (Vaughan Williams: Hugh the Drover). Tenor. A drover who falls in love with Mary at first sight and fights her future husband, John, for her hand. John accuses him of being a French spy and he is put in the stocks. When soldiers arrive and recognize him as a loyal Englishman, he is released and he and Mary leave town for their new life on the open road.
