InterMune has found a good thing in interferon gamma. The company's sole marketed product is Actimmune (interferon gamma-1b), an FDA-approved treatment for two rare congenital disorders: chronic granulomatous disease, an immune condition; and osteopetrosis, a disease causing abnormal bone growth. Most of Actimmune's sales, however, are for off-label use of the drug to treat the deterioration of lung function from scarring caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). InterMune is developing another potential IPF treatment called pirfenidone, and it is also researching hepatitis C therapies with Roche.
