Saints: Ismael

Ismael (Ysfael, Osmail) (6th century), Welsh bishop. According to the Life of Oudoceus he was the son of Budic, a prince of Cornouaille, forced into exile in Dyfed, whence he returned to Brittany, but his sons, including Ismael, later returned to Wales. Here it is claimed that the three brothers were disciples of David, Dyfrig, and Teilo, and that Ismael was consecrated by Teilo and became ‘bishop of Menevia’ after St. David. There are several dedications to Ismael in Pembrokeshire and one in Carmarthenshire. Feast: 16 June.
