Jasper is a city in Pickens County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,167 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Pickens County[3]. It is named after General Andrew Pickens, a Revolutionary War hero who fought the Cherokee in 1760 and 1782.
Geography
Jasper is located at 34°28′9″N 84°26′3″W / 34.46917°N 84.43417°W / 34.46917; -84.43417 (34.469127, -84.434039)[4].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 square miles (8.5 km²), all of it land.
Points of Interest
Nicknamed "The First Mountain City," Jasper is located 50 miles north of Atlanta, Georgia. Several local attractions draw the interest of sightseers annually. The Tate House[1]which was built by local marble baron Sam Tate in the 1920s, and sits adjacent to the current Tate Elementary. Standing on an old Cherokee place of worship, the historic Woodbridge Inn[2] is famous for its menu options and its lodging.
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,167 people, 942 households, and 575 families residing in the city. The population density was 657.0 people per square mile (253.5/km²). There were 1,030 housing units at an average density of 312.3/sq mi (120.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.74% White, 4.38% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.12% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.23% of the population.
There were 942 households out of which 28.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.5% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.82.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 80.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $40,833. Males had a median income of $30,774 versus $25,489 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,184. About 9.2% of families and 15.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.1% of those under age 18 and 19.5% of those age 65 or over.
