Biography

Volkova is an only child, born in a middle-class family in Moscow. Her father was a businessman named Oleg Volkov and her mother was a hairdresser named Larissa Volkova.[1] At the age of 6, Volkova enrolled in music school and began learning how to play the piano. When she was 9, Volkova became a member of the children's singing chorus Neposedi, from which she would later meet fellow t.A.T.u singer, Lena Katina.[2]

At age 11, Volkova transferred to a school fostering artistic talent, and three years later left Neposedi to join t.A.T.u. She has insisted that she was banned from Neposedi for misbehaving,[3] but Neposedi representatives deny this, saying that she simply graduated as all of their members did at a certain age.

In February 2003, Volkova was reported to have had an abortion after being spotted at an abortion clinic in Moscow. It was later confirmed by Volkova in the 2003 documentary series "Anatomy of t.A.T.u."[4] In May 2004, Volkova announced that she was pregnant by her then long-time boyfriend Pavel (Pasha) Sidorov, which caused some controversy due to Sidorov already having a wife and a daughter.[5] Daughter Viktoria Pavlovna Volkova was born on 23 September 2004, in Moscow.[6] She does not keep in contact with Sidorov.[7]

After Volkova and Sidorov parted, rumors circulated that Yulia was going to marry ex-Smash!! member Vlad Topalov[8] and was dating the Russian rapper Timati.[9]

Volkova is currently in a long term relationship with businessman Parviz Yasinov. The press reported that the two got married and she converted to Islam for him, but her official site denies this.[10] It was reported and confirmed that Volkova was pregnant with her second child, her first with Yasinov, around June 2007.[11] Volkova gave birth to a baby boy named Sam on December 27, 2007, in Moscow.[12] The couple have stated that they want to get married in the future.[13]

On June 5, 2008, t.A.T.u. cancelled a concert scheduled for June 19 due to Volkova falling ill.[14] The official site didn't give exact details of her illness. It has been speculated by the media that she either was diagnosed with postpartum depression[15] or had plastic surgery to enhance her lips,[16] but nothing was ever confirmed. On June 19, a blog entry was posted by Lena saying that "Yulia's better"[17] and shortly after Volkova appeared to be resuming normal activities.

Many Russian websites started claiming Yulia had left t.A.T.u. to go solo in March 2009. The group's blog rejected the claims that Yulia had quit but stated that both girls would be doing separate solo projects from now on and t.A.T.u was no longer a full time job. The following statement on Yulia's future was released by the insider:

Yulia will deal with her life and career absolutely independently. At least without the t.A.T.u.'s management. She traveled to Los Angeles without Lena, who stayed in Moscow those days. On the 4-th of March Yulia, Boris and Sven met in LA studio to record English vocals for "220" ("Sparks"). Concerning all other Yulia's businesses in LA, I have not more idea than you do. Yulia is quite free to share the details of evolutions of her solo career via t.A.T.u.'s information services, if she comes to such a wish.[18]

Vocal Cyst

In early 2004, Volkova's voice began to deteriorate during the recording of t.A.T.u.'s second album, after developing a vocal fold cyst. Despite the reluctance of t.A.T.u.'s management, she underwent surgery to remove the cyst in October 2004.[citation needed]
