Maupin is a city in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. The city is centered around the Deschutes River, and much of the city's economy is related to the river through outdoor activities, such as fishing and rafting. The population was 411 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Maupin is located at 45°10′26″N 121°4′59″W / 45.17389°N 121.08306°W / 45.17389; -121.08306 (45.173872, -121.082926)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.5 km²), of which, 1.3 square miles (3.4 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (4.38%) is water. Road access is provided by U.S. Route 197 which crosses the Deschutes River in town at one of the few places the Deschutes can be crossed north of Madras

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 411 people, 181 households, and 112 families residing in the city. The population density was 314.1 people per square mile (121.1/km²). There were 244 housing units at an average density of 186.5/sq mi (71.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.81% White, 3.41% Native American, 2.92% Asian, 1.95% from other races, and 2.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.87% of the population.

There were 181 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 113.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,944, and the median income for a family was $38,854. Males had a median income of $37,750 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,626. About 13.3% of families and 17.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 40.0% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
