Located approximately 200 km from Brazzaville, in Congo, Mbé was the seat of the Mbé Domain.
Site Description
The royal domain of Mbé is composed of a whole area of sites related to the culture and the history of the Bateke people of which the city of Mbé is capital of the kingdom and residence of the Makoko (king). The Mbe Kingdom knew ceaseless displacements throughout its history. The Precolonial Bateke cultural tradition indeed required the displacement of the capital “Mbé” each time a king had suddenly died.
World Heritage Status
This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on June 12, 2008 in the Cultural category.[1]
