The mejoranera is a Panamanian musical instrument similar to a guitar but slightly smaller and with a shorter neck. It first appeared at the town of La Mesa in Veraguas, but is now popular in all central provinces, Veraguas, Herrera and Los Santos, and the most representative musical instrument of this country. The instrument takes five strings which originally were crafted from dry fibers of Bejuco, horse hairs, later of guts, and at the present time of nylon. The wood used to construct the Mejoranera is cedar. Traditionally, the Mejoranera was used to play cumbia, mejorana and others.
