N-Methylethanolamine is an alkanolamine and toxic flammable corrosive colorless viscous liquid. It is the biochemical precursor of choline.
With both an amine and an hydroxy functional groups, it is a useful intermediate in the chemical synthesis of various products including polymers and pharmaceuticals. It is also used as a solvent, for example in the natural gas-processing industry together with its analogs ethanolamine and dimethylethanolamine.
N-Methylethanolamine can be prepared by the reaction of ethylene oxide with methylamine.
