Motilal Nehru National Institute Of Technology (MNNIT) is one among the elite group of institutions for engineering education in India referred to as the National Institutes of Technology. The institute is located in the city of Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was formerly known as Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College and was affiliated to University of Allahabad. In surveys by Dataquest magazine (in collaboration with NASSCOM), the institute consistently ranks amongst the top-20 T-schools in India.[1]. The institute scores very highly in parameters such as Placements, Infrastructure and Academic Environment.[citation needed]

History

Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College was established in the year 1961 as a joint enterprise of Centre and Govt of Uttar Pradesh. The foundation stone of the institute was laid down by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India and the institute was named after his father, renowned lawyer and freedom fighter, Motilal Nehru.

The main building of college was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on April 18, 1965. With effect from June 26 of 2002 the college became deemed university and is now known as Motilal Nehru National Institute of technology.

The institute came into existence to offer Bachelor Degree Programmes in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in 1961. The institute was the first in the country to offer an Undergraduate program in Computer Science & Engineering which was started in the year 1976-77. Subsequently in the year 1982-83 undergraduate programmes in Electronics Engg. and Production and Industrial Engg. were started.

Graduate programmes were introduced in the year 1970-71 by starting Master Degree courses in all engineering departments. The institute now offer various M.Tech. degree programs M.C.A & M.Sc Mathematics & Scientific Computing. course and registers candidates for Ph.D. degree. The institute has been recognised by the Government of India as one of the centres for the quality improvement programme in Civil and Mechanical Engg. To add a new dimension to itself the institute has started a two year / four semesters Post Graduate Degree in Management Studies from 1996.

Recently, the institute has also added undergraduate programmes in Chemical Engineering and BioTechnology.

The college has been recognised by AICTE as a centre for the Quality Improvement Programme. In 1972, the college initiated a project and established an industrial estate with 68 sheds with the objective of encouraging entrepreneurs and creating additional revenue. The college has also been a member of Indo-UK REC Project, in the area of design. Under this scheme, a Design Center has been established at a cost of about Rs. Six Crore, which offers training and consultancy in various areas.It has been given the status of Institute of National Importance (INI) bringing it at par with IITs, IISc and ISI on 15 August 2007.

Infrastructure

MNNIT is situated at a site spreading over 222 acres (0.9 km2) on the bank of the river Ganges.

MNNIT is fully residential institution with seven hostels for boys and one for girls. One hostel is exclusively for post graduate students. The capacity of boys hostel is 1800 (1044 single seated rooms and 252 quadruple seated rooms ) and that of girls hostel is 145. Room allotment is done in such a way that students from different parts of country freely intermingle with each other depicting national integration. A 100 Mbit/s Local Area Network (LAN) integrates the entire college campus and the hostels. A 32 Mbit/s leased line from RELIANCE & 8 Mbit/s from BSNL offers 24 x 7 internet connectivity.

Other buildings on the campus include Computer Center, Central Library, CAD lab, Geo Lab, Concrete Lab, heat engine lab, electrical machines lab, virtual instrumentation lab, mechanical workshop, Multi purpose hall, conference and seminar hall.

The library subscribes to 68 Indian and 200 International technical periodicals. Online access to journals is available as well.

It is among the few technical institutions in India to house two supercomputers, Param 8000 and param 10000.

Academics

The institute offers 9 undergraduate programs in Engineering of four year duration and 19 graduate programs of two year duration. Undergraduate programs lead to the B.Tech. degrees, while the graduate programs in Engineering lead to M.Tech. degrees. The institute also enrolls Ph.D. candidates. The Computer Science department also offers a Masters in Computer Applications(MCA). The institute was the first in the country to offer an undergraduate program in Computer Science and Engineering. MNNIT also has a B-school known as the School of Management Studies. Institute has recently added new a Masters course in Computational Mathematics namely M.Sc in Mathematics & Scientific Computing.

All the hostels have a care taker, an assistant warden and a warden separately. A Chief warden is head of all hostels and the post is held by a senior faculty member of the Institute.

Apart from Indian students, candidates from many countries such as Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Iran, Mozambique,Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand also join MNNIT for various undergraduate and post-graduate programs.

Festivals

MNNIT hosts four Major National Level Meets namely:

a) 'Avishkar' - Annual National Level Technical Meet: One of its kind in terms of quality and scale of events.

b) 'Culrav' - Annual Cultural Festival: It showcases the diverse cultural wealth of India through the mediium of a wide number of competitions. In other words, it unarguably a celebration of the vibrant spirit of MNNIT.

c) 'Gnosiomania' - Annual National Level Quiz Festival: It's one of the first of such events showcased in the country.

d) 'Robofest'- Robofest - "The Rise of Machines" is a three day national level extravaganza dedicated solely to the field of Robotics. Organised by MNNIT Robotics Club each year, the events receives bountiful participation from the institute as well as from outside. Robotics Club at MNNIT was founded on 7th of November 2004 by robotics enthusiasts. In addition to Robofest and Avishkar, Robotics Club keeps the campus active throughout the year with various projects, theoretical as well as practical demonstrations to new-comers, helping students to participate in reputed robotics competitions, etc.
