New York & Company has taken a bite out of fashion's big apple. The firm caters to women looking for moderately priced apparel (jeans, dresses, and coordinates) and accessories (sunglasses, costume jewelry, handbags, and hosiery) mostly at the mall. The chain sells its proprietary branded fashions through more than 550 stores, including about two dozen outlet shops, in 40-plus states and online. Founded in 1918 and operated as a subsidiary of Limited Brands from 1985 to 2002, the chain was sold to an investor team including former CEO Richard Crystal and Irving Place Capital for $153 million. The new owners took New York & Company public in 2004. More recently, the company has struggled to turn a profit.
