Chicago-based Nuveen Investments once financed the growth of its hometown and other cities by underwriting and trading municipal bonds. Today Nuveen is parlaying its investment banking experience into a career as a money manager for individual and institutional investors in the US. The firm sells its investment products, including separate accounts, managed accounts, mutual funds, and closed-end funds through banks, brokerages, insurance agents, and other financial service providers. It has approximately $120 billion of assets under management. An investor group led by private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners acquired Nuveen for nearly $6 billion in 2007.
