Olivia is a popular female name pronounced a/o-LIV-ee-a. It is a Latinate name, coined by Shakespeare for the rich heiress wooed by the duke in Twelfth Night (1599).[citation needed] He might have derived the name from the olive plant (Latin: 'oliva') or used it as a feminine form of Oliver.[1]
