Orin

Wikipedia: Orin

Odran is a name derived from Saint Odran or Odhran (meaning "pale green" in Irish Gaelic. Odran is pronouced as "oh-drin". Odran was the chariot driver of St. Patrick and died protecting him in an ambush in Ireland by pagans whose target was Saint Patrick himself. According to legend, Odran knew of this ambush beforehand upon overhearing the pagan natives. He then requested that Patrick change places with him on the chariot where it would appear Patrick was the charioteer in the stead of Odran, who pretended to be Patrick. The ambushers seeing Odran not driving the chariot assumed he was Saint Patrick and killed him. Patrick survived because of this deed and Odran's sacrifice enabled Patrick to continue his duty to spread Christianity in Ireland. It is argued amongst scholars that Odran was the first Irish Christian martyr.

Seventeen saints have used the name Odran and Odhran.

Another Odran was an abbot of Meath, was one of the 12 devotees who accompanied St. Columba to Iona. When he died soon after their arrival, Columba saw Odhran's soul ascending to heaven following a battle between angels and demons. The name is spelled several ways including Orrin in English; and Oran, Orin in Irish Gaelic. In Hebrew, the name Oren means "pine tree" or "ash tree" or "tree of light."
