Overview

Ortonville, a far northern rural suburb of Detroit, was founded in 1848 by Amos Orton who built a dam across Kearsley Creek to furnish water power for his sawmill. The town was platted in 1866, and later incorporated as a village in 1902. It is located about halfway between Pontiac and Flint.

According to the census[4] of 2000 the population in town is 1,535, but Brandon Township is 14,765. Nearby Groveland Township is 6,150. In spite of urban sprawl, Ortonville has a small town Midwest feel with hard working "folks." It offers festivals and parades happening in downtown several times in summer months. There are lovely places for camping, fishing, and hiking.

People from Michigan will often hold up their right hand as a "mitten map" of Michigan and point to show where in they have lived. For people more familiar with the region locals say Ortonville is close to "Pine Knob," now renamed DTE Energy Music Theatre.

Surrounding towns include Goodrich to the north, Oxford to the east, Clarkston to the south, and Holly to the west.

Public School System

Its primary public schools are Brandon Schools[6], in Brandon Township. Students are comprised mostly of Brandon and Groveland Township residents. Brandon High School is the home of the Blackhawks.

The schools in the district are:

  • Brandon High School (grades 9-12)
  • Brandon Middle School (grades 7&8)
  • Brandon Fletcher Intermediate School (grades 5&6)
  • H.T. Burt Elementary (grades K-4)
  • Harvey Swanson Elementary (grades K-4)
  • Belle Ann Elementary (grades K-4)
  • Sherman Life Long Learning Center
  • Smithling Special Education Center
