("breach")
Son born from the union of Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar. The twin brother of Zerah (Gen 38:29; I Chr 2:4); father of Hezron and Hamuel (Gen 46:12; Num 26:21; I Chr 2:5) and ancestor of the most important family of the tribe of Judah, the Perezites (Num 26:20).
The struggle for dominance within the tribe of Judah is probably reflected in the story of Perez' birth (Gen 38:27-30).
He is listed first in the genealogical list of the tribe of Judah, and his supremacy is linked to the tradition that he was an ancestor of David (Ruth 4:18-22; Matt 1:3; Luke 3:33). Four hundred and sixty-eight descendants of Perez are mentioned in the list of inhabitants to Jerusalem at the time of Nehemiah (Neh 11:6).
