Philippe the Chancellor

(b Paris, c 1160-80; d there, 1236). French poet. His duties as Chancellor of Paris (1218-36) included responsibility for the University. His Latin poems and at least one French song survive with music, though it is not clear whether he was the composer. The high proportion of contrafacta reveals an extensive knowledge of the repertory. His primary importance lies in his substantial contribution to the repertory of Notre Dame conductus and his role in the early motet.
