Photofrin (porfimer sodium) is a medication used as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy for palliative treatment of obstructing endobronchial non-small cell lung cancer and palliative treatment of obstructing oesophageal cancer. (FDA approval Dec 1995)
In August 2003 the FDA approved its use for Barrett’s Esophagus [1].
Photofrin is a mixture of oligomers formed by ether and ester linkages of up to eight porphyrin units [2].
