Unless the housing is damaged, there is no reason to replace it. Just replace the gasket.
follow the top radiator hose to locate the thermostat housing, remove the hose from the housing then unbolt the housing. remove and replace the thermostat and rebolt the housing to the motor, replace the hose The housing is made of cheap metal and should be replaced. It is important to "seat" the thermostat properly. Also, it is much easier to replace and remove the thermostat housing if you first remove the timing belt housing.

Follow the top radiator hose over to the engine and where it connects to the thermostat housing. There should be two bolts holding the housing to the motor. Remove the housing and replace the thermostat and gasket. The larger side of the thermo goes in the engine.
If you do not know how to replace it, then you should not try to replace it. If you want to know WHERE it is, then look near the thermostat housing.
First locate the lower radiator hose, that hose should lead you to the thermostat housing (just behind the motor and to the left). This hose should be the same size as the top radiator hose. Second you move the clamp (pliers will work) down the hose away from the thermostat housing, then loosen that hose from the thermostat housing. Third you take of the 2 Bolts off from the thermostat housing, they should be 10mm. Remove the thermostat. When you replace the thermostat you may also need to replace the gasket. Simply put the bolts back in and tighten them, then reattach the lower radiator hose and move the clamp back to its original position. Note: The top radiator hose does NOT lead you to the thermostat housing!

take apart the thermostat housing and pop it out be sure and replace the gasket too. There should be two bolts holding it together.
First you have to take off the fan shroud and fan. From there you will see where the upper radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing. It should be held in by 2 bolts just take those out and the housing will come with it. Underneath that housing is your thermostat. That's how it is on a 98 jeep unless yours is after 2002 it should be the same
It is located under the thermostat housing. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. This is the thermostat housing. Remove the 2 bolts and pull housing off motor (motor should be cold when doing this). clean off gasket surfaces & replace thermostat. Bolt housing back on, open radiator, top off with coolant.
