Did u ever find a solution?!?! My driver side rear door will not open from inside or out! Both doors won't open from inside but the doors were still useful when opened from
Outside. It's annoying!
On your 1997 Mercury Mountaineer : Open the rear doors from the outside and on the end of the doors near the latch you will see a small lever that is used to select child locks on or off
Sorry, dude.
The child lock feature is probably switched on , open the back doors from outside and on the end of each door about 3 inches from the latching mechanism is a small lever , move the lever down
5x7 in both front and rear doors.
if you spray the latch inside of your doors with wd40, this should take care of your problem. Over time dirt build up inside causing the signal not to be received by the sensor. hope this help.

Usually means that all doors (including rear hatch) are not closed securely.
an egg
The door ajar light might stay on in a Mercury Mountaineer if a door is not shut properly. Sometimes a door will seem like it is shut, but will not be shut enough to trip the light off. Check for dirt or other debris in the door latch for all doors.
Could be a bad actuator in the door
I've had that happen in my 2002 mountaineer. what I've found is that if you spray the door latches with wd40 it will clean off the sensors and the door ajar light should go out. but make sure all the doors are shut.
In the front passenger footwell by the kick panel ( the kick panel is the interior trim panel just in front of the front doors by a persons feet )
