Animals in the open ocean are torpedo shaped for speed and in particular, Flying Fishactually jump out of the water to disconcert it's predator, the tuna and changes at a 90 degree angle so it cannot be followed, after which, it jumps back into the water. Other animals that are slow, adapt by being transparent, like jellies. Still others adapt by being super tiny, practically invisible, which are plankton both phytoplankton and zooplankton. Sea turtles adapt by being big and having a shell. All open ocean animals have to adapt to being summerged in sea water, which is salty. Water beathing animals use gills and sharks in particular are able to move between different pressure waters because their blood has the same salinity of the ocean, therefore they can travel to the depths or the surface, without an air sac. On the other hand, animals with lungs, like whales are adapted to the open ocean because they can hold their breath a long time, they experience brachiocardia, the slowing the their heartbeats, and they have increased storage of oxygen in their muscles, which allows them to hold their breath for up to 30 minutes. Other adaptations fish have has to do with their swimming muscles; there are two kinds: white and red. The white muscles are low in oxygen and designed for moving gently over long distances. The red muscles have a high content of oxygen and are able to provide the fish with speeding bursts, either for hunting or running from a predator.
