A group called Surinen who inhabited the area before the arrival of the Europeans is whom Suriname is thought to be named after. The Surinen were Arawak speaking Tainos, a group of people believed to originate either in the Amazon Basin or in the Colombian Andes. Arawak speakers were the natives encountered by Cristoforo Colombo [c. 1451-May 20, 1506] when he first landed in the Americas.
