This can mean many things, I would hope that by the time you are putting a promise ring on someone's finger that you have more context than some stranger on the internet.
It could mean that she was really touched, and this symbol says more than words can express.
It could mean that you clearly really do not know her, and this gift symbolizes how much you have missed the mark.
You will have to fill in some of the details for yourself. Here are some hints to get your mind working:
- Did she seem really happy to receive it?
- Was it the last thing you did before you parted ways (eg dropped her at the airport and handed her a promise ring with the carryon baggage as you unloaded from the car, gave it to her while kissing her goodnight at the end of a date.)? Is so, did she stay a little longer to receive it, or did she take it and continue on her way?
- Does she know it is a promise ring?
- What else did she say in the email?
- Have you had no contact with her for days after this?
- Have you received a notice from the police that there is a restraining order against you?
- Has she returned the ring?
- Is she in favour of marriage?
- What are your respective views on pre-marital sex? (ie could she think that you believe this is a ticket for sex that might otherwise not be an option)
- Can you ask her friends whether they know what she thought of your gift?
Having gone through these questions and if you are still mystified, maybe it would be a good idea to either send an email back talking about the next step in your relationship. You could be more subtle and proceed as before and try to organize another date with her. If she accepts it then presumably it is a good thing, if she says she thought she made herself clear then I guess she was breaking up with you, and maybe you should ask for your promise ring back. Alternatively, you could totally mix up the rules of your relationship and actually ask her what it meant to her.
