Agnus is the Latin word for Sheep, in French it is Agneau- ( Agnew is an obvious relative on the Mutton side- Nixon:s Veep). Agnus Dei means Lamb of God and refers to the sacrificial role of Christ. This is repeated in various verses in the Mass. Agnes OS of course a saint and a girl's name- naturally she is identified with a lamb. more properly the phrase means Sheep of God, but Lamb sounds better and more juvenile. Hey I never thought of it Mary had a little Lamb! ( was he born on Christmas?) Agnes , is of course a saint, a child martyr by the way. the play Agnes of God is discussed elswhere, it is not religious fare int he normal sense- it is very disturbing and suggests a Nun was sexually assaulted. Play took place in Canada- real life incident that inspired it was in Rochester, NY> (not that Rochester- NY State Police- get an apb out on a Blue and White Maxwell taxi!

First of all it is something of a parody. there was a Broadway play with this title, and the Nun"s habits were not correctly drawn- some resembling the headgear of Pre-War I German officers.- the phrase is obviously derived from the Latin Agnus Dei- usually translated as lamb of God and a reference to the Christ. More properly it is sheep, but Lamb is usually used. Agnes , is of course a female name and there was a Saint Agnes. The Broadway play , apart from the title, is very controversial and bears no relationship to the usual, reverent usage of the Phrase- as in Agnes Dei, Qui Tolli Peccata Mundi- Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the World!.
