Well it sort of depends on how old you are. If you're a 10-17 years old, phones are a necessity. It really helps in many cases. I know when I go to school, I sometimes have to call my parents to ask them to pick me up at a certain time instead of the regular time. Using the phone at the office is really difficult because there's always a huge line of forgetful students. An obvious fact is that kids who don't have cell phones are looked down on with pity. It's sort of sad, and I remember when everyone had the coolest phones with QWERTY keyboards and all, and I didn't have anything.
If you're an adult, it's not AS important, but it's good to have it. If you get any business calls, it's perfect. You can also check emails and go on the internet which is useful (if you're willing to pay the extra data charges) Without it, no one can reach you if you go out. I know some of my friends don't even have home phones anymore-everyone in their family has cell phones.
