I always used to swear by AMD processors. They are good. However they have one major disadvantage over Intel processors - the Front Side Bus (FSB) speeds are considerably slower and can effectively halve the performance of your machine. AMD are still cheaper and up to the X2 / Duo's they appeared to be similar in performance for real applications.

AMD also a good processor, difference between them is that an AMD is easier to overclock (make it run faster than it should) AMD's are made to be overclocked.
