If it's a bacterial infection, then a course of antibiotics is given, usually Azithromycin. Also, drink lots of fluid and get plenty of rest.
Mainly painkillers, but antibiotics can also be prescribed if the tonsillitis is caused by bacteria. If the tonsillitis returns multiple times, then a tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) will be performed.

You should go to the doctor. Tonsillitis will usually go away after about a week on it's own, but the doctor can give you antibiotics which will help with it getting better quicker. Get throat soothers or locket, they usually really help. Keep updated on paracetamol and ibuprofen.

The antibiotics used will depend on the species of bacteria that are causing the infection. A culture will need to be taken, in order to determine the susceptibility.
