Kae Sa Luk, the ancient art of Thai fruit carving, transforms fruit and vegetables to create a feast for the eyes. Fruit carvings can range from delicate edible garnishes to …large, elaborate sculptures. When done skillfully, Thai fruit carving is a truly spectacular accompaniment to a special Thai meal.Fruit carving is an art that has been practiced in Thailand for centuries. A wide variety of fruits and vegetables are painstakingly carved into abstract patterns or pleasing natural forms, such as birds, animals, and flowers. The carvings are often intricate and made colorful by carving to varying depths to display the contrast of colors between the peel, rind, and flesh of the same fruit.Thai fruit carving is said to have originated during the 14th century in the historical Thai capital of Sukhothai. During the lunar festival of Loi Krathong the king's royal consort, Nang Noppharat, created an elaborate carving to include in the ceremony of floating displays. Originally an art restricted to ladies of the royal court, in modern days, fruit carving is taught in Thai primary schools in order to preserve the skill.Fruits and vegetables are easiest to carve if they have relatively firm flesh that will retain its shape, but are not too hard to carve easily. A smooth surface and uniform shape also produce a pleasing appearance. Any type of fruit or vegetable can be used, but popular choices include watermelons, pumpkins, mangoes, and papayas. Garnishes are often carved from pieces of peeled fruit and vegetables, like slices of carrot. There are numerous highly specialized tools for fruit carving, but to begin it is most important to have a small, sharp knife with a pointed tip. It is best if the knife is lightweight, or your hand will become fatigued over time. Fruit carving knives come in a variety of sizes and shapes: some straight, some with slightly slightly curved blades, and some with crinkle cut patterns. Other tools include peelers, melon ballers, and coring tools.Try these [simple leaves made of pineapple and watermelon](http://recipes.answers.com/recipe/1196437/thai-fruit-carving-a-simple-leaf#slide=1) and check out these [tips for beginning fruit carving](http://recipes.answers.com/article/1196462/six-tips-for-thai-fruit-carving-success). Once you have mastered some basic forms, you'll be ready to use your imagination to create some patterns of your own. If you are ready to tackle more advanced carvings, you may wish to buy a book about Thai fruit carving, or even visit Thailand and take a fruit carving class to hone your skills.Even a very basic fruit carving can add a note of artistry to your plate. Fruit carving is a beautiful, fun way to express your creativity in a way that will enhance your next Thai meal. (MORE)
The term "mantra" is defined as a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that serve to encourage personal transformation. It has two parts: "man," which in Sanskrit means "m…ind," and "tra," which means "instrument." It is considered to be an instrument of the mind, a powerful sound, or a vibration that can be used to enter a deep state of meditation. Repeating a mantra is said to create a mental vibration that allows the mind to experience deeper levels of awareness. It can be used to induce relaxation and even to address mental health issues.Getting into a relaxed state can help alleviate insomnia. "Sa Ta Na Ma" is a sound mantra known as panj shabad. Saa stands for infinity, taa refers to life, naa to death or transformation, and maa to rebirth. Using these sounds can help balance the hemispheres of the brain that can relieve insomnia that is caused by an imbalance of the brainwaves. Chanting "Sa Ta Na Ma" helps to relax and sooth the mind. It can even be a catalyst for change.Ang Sang Waheguru is used to help heal and bring peace into the body. Physical as well as emotional pain can cause increased stress, tension, and insomnia. This soothing mantra helps to release pain by connecting with universal consciousness. It translates to a "dynamic, loving energy of the infinite source is dancing within my every cell, and is present in my every limb. My individual consciousness merges with the consciousness of the universe."If you worry a lot, this mantra can help you to release your fears and worries from the mind, body, and spirit. Har Har Mukunday translates to "the infinite creator liberates me." It can also be used at night to allow its flow to encourage sleep. It is said to transform challenge into opportunities. Har Har Mukunday can help to free you from whatever may be holding you back.If you feel like you are surrounded by negative energy at work or at home, Rama is said to be quite powerful for removing this from your life. The term "Rama" is a Sanskrit name or god and a popular mantra used in India. It was used by Gandhi for more than 60 years. The word Rama is simply repeated over and over. It can be chanted out loud or said silently."Om" is the most sacred and well-known mantra. It is a Sanskrit word that means the "original vibration of manifestation." Om is the process of manifesting mental energy and intention through the physical world. The word is short, powerful, and soothing. The vibration it creates in the throat continues throughout the body, mind, and spirit and induces the ultimate in relaxation. The sound of the word actually has four distinct aspects to its creation, including the "ah" sound which is a long "o" sound, and "mmmm," for sound and silence. Many meditation teachers believe that a mantra should have personal meaning; therefore, choosing your own word might be the most effective method. Any word that has little meaning can also work to relax as it is not distracting. It can be something that is soothing like "love" or "peace." They may take the form of one or two syllables, such as om which literally means "I am," or soham, meaning "I am that." Whatever word you choose, it's best to use a sound that has a relaxing feel. After repeating your chosen word or phrase for a while, it should bring you to a deep, quiet place in your mind. Here, external noise is blocked out and everything seems tranquil. Your breathing is subtle, muscles and head are relaxed, and your mind is at peace. It is similar to comparing normal life as choppy waves at sea; as you go down deeper, the water is less noisy. When you reach the bottom, all is still, quiet, and peaceful. This brings about the ultimate in relaxation, which can help improve mental health issues in addition to offering numerous physical health benefits as well. Those who practice meditation or relaxation mantras on a regular basis have been found to have a 10 to 15 percent decrease in the risk of heart attack or stroke. Approximately three-quarters of insomniacs who started a daily meditation program were able to fall asleep within 20 minutes of going to bed. Women with PMS showed symptom improvements after 5 months of meditation practice. Nearly 60 percent of people who are prone to anxiety have shown marked improvements in anxiety levels within 6 months of using relaxation techniques on a regular basis. (MORE)

One of the unique features of cells located in the heart is the ability to conduct electricity. Electricity moving along the heart triggers the various cells in the heart to c…ontract, causing a heartbeat. The origination of this electric current also determines the heart rate. Electricity is generated by cells in the heart. All of this electricity is generated and directed by the cardiac electrical system. The heart produces electricity due to ions of calcium, potassium and sodium entering and exiting heart muscle cells. This is known as the sodium-potassium pump. Normally, sodium is located outside the body and potassium is located inside the body; when these ions switch places, the body uses active transport to return potassium to the inside of the cell and move sodium outside the cell. This causes an electrical charge to occur and is an integral part of the cardiac electrical system. The sinoatrial (SA) node is where the cells of the sodium-potassium pump are mainly located. When electricity is generated, it passes through the SA node. The SA node is known as the body's "natural pacemaker" as it sets the rate at which this electricity is released. The amount of electricity released is proportional to the heart rate. During times of rest, the SA node releases electricity that causes the heart rate to occur somewhere between 60 and 100 beats per minute. The SA node releases electricity into the cells of the atria. The atrioventricular (AV) node is located at a point between the atria and ventricles. Upon receiving electricity from the SA node and atria, the AV node regulates the electricity into the Bundle of His. The AV node also contains cells that are able to create electricity. That said, the amount of electricity created by the AV node is less than the amount that is created in the SA node. In the event of an SA node malfunction, the AV node is capable of serving as a "backup pacemaker." A heart controlled by the AV node is capable of beating 40-60 times a minute. The bundle of His transfers electricity from the AV node into the ventricles. This electricity is transferred from the bundle of His into several branching fibers known as the Purkinje fibers. These fibers branch of into different portions of the ventricles. The release of this electricity causes ventricular contraction. The bundle of His is also capable of generating electrical current in the event of SA and AV node failure. A heart controlled by the bundle of His is capable of beating 20-40 times per minute.Electricity is generated in the SA node via the sodium-potassium pump. From there, electricity passes through the atria and into the AV node. Electricity passing through the atria on the way to the AV node causes the atria to contract. The AV node transfers electricity to the bundle of His and the Purkinje fibers. This causes ventricular contraction. The hearts electrical system stimulates the cells in the heart to beat. The depolarization cycle of the heart is mapped by an electrocardiogram. The P wave represents the SA node, the PR interval represents the AV node, the QRS wave represents the Purkinje fibers and the ST segment represents the repolarization of the ventricles. Medical personnel use the waveform created by the ECG to diagnosis cardiac electrical conduction problems by comparing the waves to the normal standard. (MORE)
The Sony SA-NS400 projects music in one room of your house. With multiple speakers and high-quality sound, this product is far better than a traditional CD or iPod player. The …Sony SA-NS400 HomeShare Wi-Fi Network Speaker is a wireless, single-speaker system. This product sounds simple, but it actually has 360-degree sound projection capability, and it contains four two-way speakers and a built-in subwoofer. To use this product, simply connect this device to your wireless connection by running an Ethernet cable from the speaker to your computer. Once the wireless connection is complete, simply remove the cable. With this system, you have the ability to play music streamed from compatible Sony HomeShare devices or stream content from your computer. The Sony SA-NS400 also provides an analog stereo input for a portable media player or CD player. When used by itself, the Sony SA-NS400 offers room-filling sound, and the device works in any room of your home as long as it is within reach or your wireless signal. The sound quality of the system is better than other comparable devices. The 360-degree sound projects a balanced soundfield throughout the room. When playing music content, you have the ability to bookmark up to 30 music selections. The stereo separation is narrow, so it doesn't sound as good as when you are across the room from the speaker. The speaker also emits static if you place it near certain electronic devices.Another problem with this product is that you have to buy more Sony products to get all of the features to work. For example, you need to buy another Sony Homeshare device to control the speaker remotely. The Sony SA-NS400 offers great room-filling sound, but it does not sound as good if you are sitting close to the speaker. In addition, you have to buy other Sony products to use all of its features.
