It started 4576.2 million years ago with the formation of Earth and ended 542 million years ago at the start of the Cambrian Period. It is made up of the Hadean, Archean and Proterozoic Eons. Although the super-eon is widely recognised as a time division this is only an unofficial term. The ICS prefer to use the Eon when describing the time before the Cambrian.

The Geologic Time Scale is divided up by four major intervals. In order from Largest to smallest: Eons are the largest time frame covering hundreds of millions of years. Eons are divided into smaller time intervals known as Eras. Eras are subdivided into Periods. Periods are broken into finer subdivisions known as Epochs.

The Precambrian consisted of the Archean and Proterozoic Eras which each pull roughly 2 billion years of geologic time making up the first 4 billion years of Earth. The Archean from 4.5 Billion Years Ago to about 2.5 BYA and the Proterozoic from 2.5 BYA to about 570 MYA. The Paleozoic which preceded the Mesozoic lasted about 345 Million years (570 MYA- 225 MYA) and the Mesozoic lasted about 215 Million years (225 MYA- 65 MYA).

The Precambrian Era began with the formation of Earth around 4600 Ma (million years ago). It extends to the beginning of the Cambrian Period, about 542 Ma, when macroscopic hard-shelled animals first appeared in abundance. It lasted 4 billion years, and makes up about 88% of Earth's geological time. The Precambrian is technically divided into three eons: - Hadean (4500-3950 Ma) - Archean (3950-2500 Ma) - Proterozoic (2500-542 Ma)

An eon is a made up of two or more eras. They are defined in terms of what was happening on the planet in biological and geological terms rather than in number of years. We are now 541 million yeras (Myr) into the current eon - the Phanerozoic eon. Before that was the Proterozoic eon which lasted 1959 Myr, the Archean eon (1500 Myr) and the oldest, the Hadean eon (500 Myr).

The longest subdivision of geologic time is called an super eon. Super eons make up a REALLY big chunk of time, around 2-4 billion years! There has only been 1 super eon the-Precambrian super eon. The hasn't been any new super eons due to the gap between Precambrian super eon & today-only a few hundred million years.
